Wherever you visit, you can usually find a good variety of places to stay; we realise that this isn't just restricted to cottages and that there is competition from b&bs and hotels. Cottages are usually found in country villages and areas, but can be modern as well as traditional. This year we have seen more cottages available in Hertford than ever before. Taking your family away can be fun and stressful, but we find that staying in a cottage takes much of that stress away. The excitement of a new bedroom that they can make their own is enough draw, without all the benefits of playing outside in the safety of a quiet rural environment.

Booking the right number of bedrooms is critical as although too many is a luxury, too few can be a big problem. Although we can't promise this for all our cottages in Hertford and Hertfordshire, many of them are very close to a number of outdoor facilities. There are usually opportunities to play golf or tennis, or if you're into solo sports there's always biking, running and sometimes archery. However, if you're like us, we tend to use the time to relax, read a good book, catch up on sleep and generally laze around.

The best thing (at least as far as we're concerned) about staying in a Hertford holiday cottage is the self-catering. It's great to cook your own food, know exactly what ingredients are going in, and enjoying the reward of a great meal. Cars are by far the preferred mode of transport and travel to Hertford and Hertfordshire. But we'd suggest that taking the car can add to the stress levels and you can arrive exhausted from a long drive. You could go by train or coach, with a short taxi ride at the other end, and then hire some bicycles to get around.
