Many of our Derby properties are in outstanding areas of natural beauty. More than ever before, there's a good selection of holiday cottages in and around Derby. Children enjoy staying in cottages even more than adults, because there's a huge sense of freedom that they just don't get in a hotel, staying with friends or even at home. The freedom to be able to come and go as you please, being able to cook your own food, or just being able to sleep in as long as you want.

There are few things better than renting a Derby cottage for a week. The busiest times of year will be around the school summer holiday, so if you don't have kids, you may want to avoid July and August. The choice of Derby cottages is very broad so its important to understand what you need in advance. There's no doubt that being in the right town or village is a big factor, but the number of beds you need is more so. Before you book, be clear on how many people need separate beds as if you're travelling with friends, they may not be up for sharing double beds!

These can include mountain biking, swimming, road cycling, climbing, canoeing, flying kites, shooting - as well as tennis and golf. Or maybe you'd be happier sitting by the side of a river with a fishing rod, a cup of coffee and a good friend?

Self-catering can make a cottage holiday in Derby much more flexible, allowing you to eat whatever you want (or can cook). Whether you love cooking up a large stew, a roast dinner or just prefer a toasted cheese sandwich - it can match your mood. Most people will drive to their destination because it gives them increased mobility on their holiday. But we'd suggest that taking the car can add to the stress levels and you can arrive exhausted from a long drive. Buses and coaches are often surprisingly good value, and a train journey will take you through countryside you'll never see from the road.
